I only ran a marathon!!

Please accept my sincere apologies for the delay in a race recap, I’m now in the final few weeks of uni and there have been some uber important, uber intensive bits of work to get done first!

Well, Sunday April 15th 2012 was Brighton Marathon. We set the alarm for 5.45am and got up and had our breakfast. My race day breakfast without fail is gluten-free porridge oats made with water, a scoop of chocolate protein powder and a banana (ate on the way).

I didn’t feel too great at this point, had a bad cold and sore throat which were not what I wanted on a day I was running a marathon! I made sure I had a pack of tissues to take round with me as I knew a runny nose would annoy me.

We set off for Brighton and arrived at 7.15am which was perfect timing as we didn’t have to queue for long to get into the carpark. We then got the bus to the starting area.

I was feeling so nervous at this point! Having never run a marathon before, total eeek! We hung around and got ourselves ready. Handed in our kitbags and off we went to the starting pens. Rob is faster than me and so he was a few pens in front.

While waiting for the countdown and to cross the start line I felt so emotional! It was really silly, felt like I was going to launch into a full-on sob! It wasn’t long, only 17 minutes, when I finally crossed the start line.

It was a fab atmosphere and we went all over, it was weird to be running along roads I normally walk along when shopping!

My fuel of choice was Clif Shot Bloks and Powerade. The Bloks went in my little running pouch along with my tissues and I took a Powerade with me. After I had been running for 1 hour I ate a Blok every 20 minutes or so, so I used up 2 whole packs of Bloks by the end.

It was so cool! I really felt great and really enjoyed the running. My nose and upper lip were so sore though from constantly blowing my nose, but the lovely St Johns Ambulance people had plenty of Vaseline for me to smear on my face every so often. Lovely!!

I had a few moment where it was really bizarre and I looked at my Garmin and went “oh that’s gone quick!” or “oooh 3 hours already!” it really did fly by!

In my training the furthest I had run was 20 miles and so I got to the 20 mile marker and was very aware that I was entering unknown territory. Also very aware that this is what people call the wall, or the road to hell!!!! BUT it felt fine! My marathon playlist was keeping me going, with lots of boppy tracks. When I started to feel it was after the 25 mile marker. Knowing you’re so close but what feels like so far is quite draining! You just have to keep going though, and the support at this beyond and to the end was amazing. But definitely, the last mile and a half I found hard. What also made it harder was that I had my eye on the time and I so desperately wanted to get in under 5 hours and I was creeping ever closer to the 5 hour mark! But I dug deep and I did it.

I completed a marathon in 4 hours, 57 minutes and 32 seconds!!!

This is what was written on the back of the finisher’s t-shirt…

I was over the moon!!! It’s a really bizarre feeling having completed a marathon because all your focus for months is on that one thing and then you complete it! That Sunday I was on cloud 9 and for the next couple of days when people ask about it. But then the aches and pains wear off and people stop asking, and that’s it. Very strange.

I was very lucky on marathon day, I didn’t get a single blister, or a single injury. I spent 2 days after feeling tight and stiff, but by the Wednesday I felt like my normal self again. That’s also why it’s a little strange, because you think- was that it?!

So, to avoid the post-marathon blues I am now focusing my training on my next goal, a 2.25 mile swim at Hampton Court on 15th July 2012. I have been looking at a couple of races and triathlons before that as well, but will tell you all about them another day!

I will definitely do a marathon again, it really was an amazing experience. I’d love to do the Disney Marathon! That would be awesome!!! I have debated long and hard about entering next year’s Brighton Marathon, but have decided not to as it is potentially going to be my first year of teaching and will be hard enough without that. But 2014 is another matter!!! 😉

Sorry to have made you all wait so long!! I am officially a marathoner!!! Whoop!!!

Race report, odds and sods

Oh my word, it has been sooooo long! Tut tut! This is kind of me at the moment!!

Life has been good, but pretty busy. Received 2 of the assignments I mentioned previous, passed both and got 64% on the one that was percentage marked! Yay me! So, still on track for my 2:1 degree. I’ve still got one to be returned, and then I’ve got to hand in some maths work, write a science assignment, write an education studies assignment and complete an art assignment. Then it’s all done! Scary stuff. Oh yeah, and the minor point of job hunting!

I have also been part of the group of girls organising our graduation ball, it’s going to be amazing! So excited with it all.

On Tuesday evening Rob and I joined a local triathlon club!! As you’d expect, we can do running, swimming and cycling sessions with them and they have several each week. This is hopefully going to take us on to the next level in our training and push us. I’m also excited because I get to buy a hoody with the logo on!!!!!!! Hahaha!

Marathon training has been going ok, a little unorthodox by anyone’s standards I am sure, but I’m getting there! I completed a local half marathon at the weekend and was really pleased because I ran the whole thing, beat my previous PB and the weather was absolutely vile!!! So if I can run in that, I can run in anything. I really really enjoyed it though! My official time was 2hrs 17mins 4secs. One day I will get in under 2 hours 😀

I am going out for a 10 mile run tomorrow, I was supposed to go out with a group this evening, but am utterly exhausted after the half at the weekend and two nights in a row of heavy swimming. I’ve just had a 4 hour nap!!! Feel much more human now. Then have got parkrun on Saturday which is fun.

It’s certainly all go at the moment, have got loads of piccies of food which I need to share with you at some point, but wanted to make sure I checked in.

Hope you’re all good, looking forward to blogging more soon 😀

Birthdays and holidays- part one!

What a couple of weeks! I had such a lovely birthday. I was well and truly spoiled by my loved ones! And I had a wonderful holiday. I will start my catch up with my birthday.

Woke in the morning and opened pressies and cards in bed!

My cat bought me these awesome running socks!

Rob bought me this beautiful dress, some awesome running sun glasses and some AMAZING Vibram Five Fingers!!! Sadly they are too big so we’re swapping them for a smaller size. Super exciting though!

Rob’s brother and wife bought me some Adidas running leggings (are you detecting a theme here?!) and this HUGE mug that is as big as my head!

Rob’s mum and her partner bought me this lovely jumper and this set from Lush, which really does smell lush!

Rob’s sister and her fella bought me this lovely necklace.

My friend bought me this fabulous scarf!

My Dad took me for dinner at the weekend and got me this cute jumper!

That morning I went and saw my friend for tea and cake. So nice to have a catch up. I then went and saw my nan and grandad and had lunch with them. I then spent the rest of the afternoon just chilling out and getting things ready for my holiday. I was so super excited!!! My flight was at 6am so we home at 3am (middle of the night!) to get to the airport. So that night was an early night to catch a few zeds before the early wake up call. Such a lovely day though 🙂

Last night we had a pretty simple dinner of roasted chicken leg, salad with spinach, tomatoes and olives, stuffed vine leaves and a curried rice mix. I made up a lovely dressing using mint, olive oil and lemon juice. Lush!

Today I had a simple breakfast of watermelon, banana, ground almonds and coconut.

Yesterday was a pretty grotty day, I had a long appointment at the hospital to test for lactose intolerance. Just one of the many tests I’m having- boo! I had to fast and then turn up at the hospital at 8.45am. They took a blood sample and then made me drink this vile liquid which was a lactose solution. Bleurgh!! They then took another blood test every 30 minutes after that until I’d had 5 blood samples taken. My poor arms are very bruised and sore today, and my poor tummy did not agree with that solution whatsoever! I am back to the doctor’s next week for more tests and some results of some others. Hopefully I can get it all sorted before I start my teaching placement.

I hope you all behaved yourselves whilst I was away! I shall be back with more updates from my wonderful holiday.

Rambling and a GIVEAWAY!!

Hullo hullo, is it Sunday night already?!

I have had a great weekend, apart from the having to eat things that cause me upset, but I have been positive about it. Blood tests tomorrow morning- eeek!!

Friday night was a lovely Italian  meal and a walk around the harbour.

Great weekend filled with triathlon and it was great to see Jonny Brownlee take the gold in the sprint championships, and team GB take gold in the relay championships.

Today has been a fab day! A 4 mile run along the seafront this morning, a good time of 34:22 😀 It was actually my longest training run ever!!!! The 10km race I did I actually just turned up for (bit naughty I know!) Same with the Grim that I did! I’ve got 5 weeks left to train for the half marathon, I’m thinking that I may only get up to 10 miles in my training, but be able to finish the run through adrenaline! We shall see what happens over the coming weeks.

Had an ice bath after- brrrrr! And then this lush bowl of porridge made with water, protein powder stirred in, topped with blueberries and cinnamon.

We then went on a 7 mile ramble over the South Downs and Beachy Head way. It was really good. There was a monster of a hill though, that tested us!!! I am now suffering with blisters though on both little toes 😦 We took lots of piccies. I really am lucky to live where I do.

We had a lovely dinner of roast chicken, salad, coleslaw, crusty bread, corn on the cob, fresh runner beans. Followed by strawberries and cream, yum!

Ice ice baby!

Run this morning was just so fab! I woke up before my alarm, I definitely have my mojo back! I ran 5km and it just felt good. Didn’t push myself and took it easy. It is such a pleasure to be back running again!

Breakfast was smoothie made with spinach, banana, blueberries, maca, Udos Beyond Greens, scoop of protein powder, teaspoon of xanthan gum. Mmmm!

Lunch was homemade veggie burger with salad and cashew nut cream cheese. I followed the recipe but also added some fresh chopped parsley and basil.

Veggie Burgers, makes 6 quarter pounders (I use the Lakeland burger press)

  • 1 tin kidney beans- mashed
  • Finely chopped onion
  • 2 carrots grated
  • 2 oz breadcrumbs- can be any type, I’ve used homemade gluten free bread for this.
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cumin
  • 4 tablespoons of fresh chopped coriander or a good shake of mixed dried herbs
  • 2 tablespoons of tomato puree
  • 1 small egg (or a flax egg)
  • Sprinkle of chilli powder to taste
  • Ground black pepper to taste

Mix it all up and then divide into burgers. Grill until brown! I cook mine in the oven and they take about 30-40 minutes. Yummy!!

Spinning tonight was super sweaty! The air con was broken, and so it was sweatier than normal. I love this class, Danny the instructor knows just how to do it. Rob took a picture of me afterwards, oh my word!!

I also had my first ever ice bath! My legs have been feeling a bit ‘ish’ and I really don’t want any more injuries, so into the cold bath it was!!! Aaaaaaargh! Once I was in though it was fine. My cat loves it as well!

Rob swears by them, and he’s run a marathon and several halves and he has never been injured, so I’m a convert! And my legs genuinely feel like new after it. Amazing.

Thank goodness for dinners in the freezer because the planned dinner was chicken, but it hadn’t fully defrosted! So we had vegetable curry with cauliflower rice. I cooked the cauliflower in some turmeric and garam masala for a bit of a different flavour. Yum!

This has highlighted to me though that I have very little in terms of meals in the freezer, so must get batch cooking again.

Hope you’ve had a good Tuesday! It has got very dark very early here, a sign that it’s nearer my birthday perhaps!! Ha ha! 😀 Less than a month, soooooooo excited!

Before I go, you must check out Jemma’s giveaway over on her blog, such a good one!
